2How do I find it on my body?
- Raise the arm out to the side to open the armpit.
- Find the deepest, central spot of the hollow.
- axillary artery
- The large artery of the arm that runs through the armpit. It continues from the subclavian artery, and you can feel its pulse by pressing deep in the middle of the armpit.
- latissimus dorsi
- The broad muscle covering the lower back and sides. It runs from the lower back and pelvis, behind the armpit, to the humerus, and pulls the arm down and back, as in a pull-up.
- pectoralis major
- The large fan-shaped muscle covering the front of the chest. It runs from the collarbone, breastbone and rib cartilages to the top of the humerus, and it tightens when you bring the arm forward or hug.
3Before you press
- The axillary artery and the brachial plexus run just beneath.
- Do not press hard or long on the pulse.
- Ease off at once if the fingers tingle.
- Avoid broken or swollen skin and press only to a comfortable level.
- Acupressure is not a substitute for medical care.
- Crushing chest pain, breathlessness or a cold sweat can signal a heart emergency — call emergency services at once; do not try acupressure.
4How has it been used traditionally?
- The first point of the Heart meridian. The Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing describes it as the place where the qi of the Hand Shaoyin vessel emerges — a historical description, not a claim of effect.
From traditional texts — not a claim of effect.
