1Where is Zhongdu?
On the front-inner leg, in the middle of the flat inner surface of the tibia.
It is 7 B-cun above the peak of the medial malleolus (inner ankle bone).
Tibia · Great saphenous vein
2How do I find it on my body?
- Find the midpoint of the line from the apex of the patella to the peak of the inner ankle bone (15 B-cun). That is 7.5 B-cun above the ankle.
- Come down 0.5 B-cun, to 7 B-cun above the ankle.
- At that height, press the middle of the inner surface of the tibia.
A cun is a body-scaled unit of length. The precise way is to divide a bone length into equal parts (proportional bone cun); finger widths are a quick estimate.
- great saphenous vein
- A vein under the skin that starts on the inner top of the foot, passes in front of the inner ankle and climbs the inner leg to the groin. It is the longest vein in the body.
- medial malleolus
- The bump on the inner side of the ankle, the lower end of the tibia. Its highest point is a starting mark for measuring lower-leg points.
3Before you press
- The skin over the tibia is thin, so press gently.
- Avoid broken or swollen skin and press only to a comfortable level.
- Acupressure is not a substitute for medical care.
4How has it been used traditionally?
- Classified as the Xi-cleft point of the Liver meridian (Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing, vol. 3) — a historical classification, not a claim of effect.
- Xi means 'cleft' or 'gap'.
From traditional texts — not a claim of effect.
